Concert Royal is a quartet of musicians dedicated to recreating the musical sound world of past times. The ensemble is one of Britain’s longest established early music groups. Flautist Peter Harrison and harpsichordist John Treherne founded Concert Royal in 1974. Their aim was to recreate musical sound worlds of the past through research, study and performance on historic instruments and to share with ttheir audiences an enthusiasm for early music.

Peter and John are joined in Concert Royal by soprano Margarette Ashton and 'cellist Rachel Gray. All four musicians have been awarded masters degrees from British universities in various aspects of music performance. The ensemble has developed a distinctive style, presenting unique performances in an entertaining and informative way.   Over the past 30 years Concert Royal has given more than 1000 recitals in every corner of the UK, performing in festivals and for music and arts societies, in churches, schools, and arts centres. The ensemble has toured in Europe, the USA and for the British Council in South America.

In addition to their work with the ensemble, Concert Royal’s musicians pursue active careers in the musical world. John Treherne heads the award-winning music service in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, and was recently awarded the MBE for services to music education. Peter Harrison lectures at the University of Hull and examines for Trinity/Guildhall, while Rachel Gray leads the music at St Michael-le-Belfry Church in York and Margarette Ashton has a successful teaching practice, also in York.
